Dental Chews – Are we bad dog owners if we don’t buy Dentastix?

denti_zpsufzr3y2q In volume, a small dog consuming a daily Dentastix  is like you or me eating several doughnuts for breakfast and just about as nourishing.

Take a look at the ingredients of Pedigree Dentastix.

We want to keep our dogs’ teeth healthy so we fall for the dental stick hype.  Advertising makes us feel like bad dog owners if we don’t buy the things.

A good chew on a raw bone (not cooked) helps keep the teeth clean. Chewing on dry kibble can also help. See here for the best approach to keeping a dog’s teeth healthy into old age.

Making sure our dogs are used to be handled from an early age means that cleaning teeth, grooming and cutting nails should be no problem at all. If the dog doesn’t like it all is not lost, but it takes time and patience to desensitise him.

Here is the story of Hamish, a little dog I went to that didn’t much like being touched.
