Eating Grass – Why does my dog do that?

eatinggrass

Why do dogs eat grass? Is it to aid digestion or for some other reason?

‘Dogs do not have the means to digest grass, as they lack the enzymes needed to break down the fibres. Thus, there is little nutritional value in it for them. One reason for eating grass may be due to a feeling of nausea. It is possible that dogs learn this is a temporary solution for stomach irritation’. (Dr. Michael Goldberg). Sometimes I think the dog just likes it, and spends a long time selecting just the right blade of grass! For more, click here.

Here is an excellent article in Dogs Naturally Magazine.

Here the story of a dog I went to with a much more immediate problem – swallowin stones.
